Two Maryland Men Try to Rob Gas Station With Live Alligator as Emotional Support Animal

Jan 7th, 2026 – Deale, MD

Two Maryland men were arrested early Tuesday morning after attempting to rob a local gas station while carrying a live alligator they claimed was their emotional support animal.

According to Baltimore County Police, the suspects entered the store around 1:48 am with the alligator on a leash, placing it gently on the counter before asking for cash, scratch off tickets and “whatever beef jerky looks premium.”

Surveillance footage shows the alligator remaining calm and motionless while the men argued over lottery numbers and repeatedly told the clerk, “He does not bite. He is a sweetheart.”

Store employee Danielle Price said, “I have worked night shift for eight years. I have seen a lot. I have never seen an alligator in my store.”

The alligator was unharmed and has been transferred to local wildlife authorities. Both suspects are facing charges including attempted robbery and unlawful possession of wildlife.

Police confirmed this is the first known case of an emotional support alligator being used in a crime in Maryland.
